June Letters was founded by graphic designer Jess Levitz. After working for years in the tech world as an in-house designer and moonlighting as a freelancer - Jess felt the urge to strike out on her own, and hasn’t looked back since. My family and I were camping out near Port Angeles over Memorial Day weekend and I had to throw a brewery visit in with our trip. I had talked with Piper Corbett (part owner) of Propolis Brewing at the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland in 2015 and decided to reach out and grab a few tastes while we were in the area.
Piper and her partner Robert Horner, have been working hard to create this gem of a brewery that fills a fascinating niche. Many of the beers include foraged ingredients, some are barrel aged, some include wild yeast.
Propolis started as a 1bbl system, just barely above the typical home brewer scale and have recently been able to upgrade to a full 15bbl brewery. While they can produce more beer, they still have the same hands-on touches - their beers are bottled by hand and the foraged ingredients are often picked by hand (Piper has a group of people that forage with her).
They offer a wide variety of styles and have bottles from a variety of vintages and styles to take home or share, we grabbed bottles of their Cedar, Beltane, and Pi, all of which were fantastic.
They offer bottles for sale through their website and at bottle shops across the country (furthest east is in Chicago), but I would recommend visiting the tap room in Port Townsend for the complete experience and full variety of beers.
Thanks Piper and Robert for the great experience and delightful beer! Cheers!

Fun fact - in the last photo Piper is talking with two women who brought a parrot along. The parrot and our son had a great time getting to know each other.
I put this little video together as a Craft Beer response to the Budweiser “Brewed the Hard Way” Ad. It has more views than all of my other videos combined.
I spent Tuesday afternoon basking in the sunshine at the OSU hop yard talking to Shaun Townsend about the hops breeding program at OSU. Hopstories producers Eric and Yancy weren’t thrilled with the big glowing orb, because it meant they had to set up lots of extra stuff…
But I…
We happen to have a bit of fun working on this Hopstories project!
