Favorite Videos 2011
It is that time of year again. A time to look back through a back-log of “likes” on Vimeo and find the videos that I think are especially good. There are a lot to choose from, but I narrowed it down. These are my favorite videos from 2011.

Gifs FTW!
Animated .gifs used to be the bain of the web. Little creatures waving at you in all of their 8-bit glory, websites with flashing backgrounds giving seizures to any un-knowing visitor, and other small annoying animations. This was all up until someone started making their pictures move.
These are referred to as cinemagraphs. There is a flickr group dedicated to them...

How we did it: 24 Hour Short Film
Compass College of Cinematic Arts puts on a 24 Hour Film Festival each year. My team and I have participated in the past 4 and have always had a great experience. Our films have come out with good reviews and made the Top Ten each year. Just in case you missed it, this is our entry into the Compass College for Cinematic Arts 24 Hour Film Festival. We won 3rd place out of around 20 teams. This film was created in 5 different states during the 24 hour period.
It was quite an undertaking and we relied heavily on a variety of services for file transfers.
Enjoy!

New video! Playing around with a 50mm 2.5 Macro lens and some extension tubes. I got some really shallow DoF here!
It is a challenge to get used to shooting macro, and I need to practice it more, since I will be shooting a lot of macro nature stuff for Freshwaters Illustrated this spring.
A scene from “There Will be Blood” with audience eye tracking overlaid. This could be a fantastic technology to use for filmmakers to see where the audience is looking during a film!

How to get paid to make movies.
This may be a little cynical, but when it comes down to it: you either sell your own work or you make things to sell other people’s work.
The ideal situation is selling your own work, but the percentage of people that can do this is so low that we often end up using our talents to sell things for other people.
One of the best ways to not feel like you are selling out your skills is to work...

How to Shoot Footage Your Editor Will Respect →
After reading this article I just had to share it. As shooters you must know when to stop rolling on a shot or when to ask for a redo. It will save editors from pulling out their hair in post!
